Traditional grammar recognizes seven parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, and conjunction. These parts of speech are considered the grammar basics. Every person will need to learn and master these parts of speech. Correct grammar is used in most careers as well in every level of higher education. These parts of speech enable the reader to understand your point of view, the topic of the paper, and to emote a feeling about the topic discussed. Adjectives are words that modify or describe a noun or pronoun. It usually answers questions such as whom, what, or how. Adverbs are words that modify or qualify a verb. It is used to describe the verb. Articles are words or phrase that precede a noun phrase and is either definite or indefinite in property. Conjunction joins words, phrases, or clauses and indicates the relationship between the elements joined. Nouns are an animate or inanimate object or concept. It often describes a person, place, or thing. Prepositions are words that link a noun to another word. Pronoun is a word used for a noun, and usually substitutes for a specific noun. There are seven common pronouns. Verb is a word indicating action or being. Every entry level college course, such as COM 155/156, will require students to write multiple papers to show their expertise of this grammar skill. Being able to use these parts of speech effectively will enable students to write a clear cohesive paper.
