As a college student, you will write many essays and research papers. Both can be done easily with planning. There are five steps in the process of writing an essay or a research paper. To begin, it is important to take time and generate ideas. Consider what the purpose of the writing is. Once a topic is chosen, which position will you defend? One should also consider the audience or who will be reading the essay. In accordance with the audience, what will these individuals need to know? Think about the point of the writing and ways to support this point. Is there enough material to defend your position? The next step is planning. One should consider how to organize ideas effectively for the readers. This is important for the flow of the paper. Arrange ideas in an outline form in order to find coherency in the writing. Now you are ready to create a rough draft. Consider how to show the readers the meaning of the essay. Construct a draft that includes an introduction that readers will find interesting. It is important to grab the readers’ attention. Create a strong conclusion to end your paper. There also needs a title that illustrates the content of the essay. The title needs to inspire the reader to want to read your paper. Once you have a rough draft it is time to revise the paper. Consider how to make the draft clearer or more convincing to the reader. Look for ideas that do not seem to follow the chain of reason. Seek to support points that need more evidence or that have weak explanations. Examples, anecdotes, and quotes can be useful tools to support your position. Connect paragraphs using transition words. Ideas that are conflicting need to be separated into paragraphs and supported fully. Finally edit the paper. Consider possible errors that confuse the reader. Such errors include: grammar, spelling, sentence fragments, and punctuation will need correction.
