We all know that technology is being accessed younger and younger these days. The other day I was at the airport and I overheard a four year old thanking his father for his new iPad mini. While we continue to see many technological advances happen so quickly what does this mean for the education of children in school? Certainly technology is changing the way children learn to read and write. With such a different approach than the past how could it not? Kaufman (2001) observed that children spend their time watching TV and playing video games when they are not spending a great deal of time reading and writing. Statistics have also been found showing that there has been a recent decline in student’s achievements. One of the major differences that computers have introduced is functions like autocorrect and spell check. Writing programs even correct grammar and illogical sentence structure . With these systems, it makes it difficult for students to learn how to spell and write effectively without a program correcting sentence structure for them. More and more we see people typing on computers and now children are taught how to enter data and take notes on a computer. Writing by hand increases the ability to retain new information and allows for the creative process to flow more smoothly. Technology certainly has its place in education and it is important to teach children how to use these systems efficiently, but without writing by hand students lose the awareness and individual senses that are allowed through this medium.
